Each year the HUEA
sponsors the Youth Workforce Program. This program
employs zone youth during the summer months, creating
over 100 jobs motivating teens to work. Two-thirds
of the employees work for zone businesses and organizations
including Hansen’s Auto Parts, Bridges, Pyramids,
Hammond Recycling Center, Bethany Childcare, and St.
Margaret’s Hospital. One third of the workforce
concentrates their effort on beautifying the city
by landscaping, trimming parkways, and painting. The
purpose of the program is threefold: zone youth acquire
earning power, previously unemployed youth are introduced
to the workforce, and local businesses and organizations
are aided with extra staffing.
The work schedule will begin in mid-June and end
in mid-July. City of Hammond high school students
who reside in the Enterprise Zone and are at least
16 years old may apply.
