For someone with a disability, transportation
is the greatest barrier to employment: waiting lists
in excess of 6 months, limited hours of operations,
fees that commonly absorb 90% or more of an earned
income amount from a part-time job and no wheelchair
accessibility are hurdles to overcome regularly. As
well as, frequently unreliable and overcrowded sources,
the consumer’s inability to read schedules,
tell time, use the phone and hold a driver’s
license. The Hammond Urban Enterprise Association
(HUEA) recognized these issues, and became determined
to make improvements for Hammond residents with disabilities
receiving services from the BRIDGES Agency. The Transportation
to Work Program began assisting people with disabilities
to utilize Triple-A-Express for rides to work in February
of 2001. The transportation provider is reliable and
finds ways to accommodate the consumers in a superior
courteous manner. Depending on the individual need,
the HUEA pays 50% to 100% of the fares for the participants.
This program makes it possible for disabled adults,
who reside in Hammond and receive services from BRIDGES,
to get to work on time, earn a paycheck and become
a vital part of the community’s workforce. The
Transportation to Work Program is a one of a kind
partnership and distinguishes the City of Hammond
and the outstanding compassion of the HUEA. February
marks the anniversary of success: for the providers,
and the individuals with disabilities happily working
in their community.
