In 2001, the HUEA’s
Youth Workforce Program implemented the Internship
Program. The purpose of this new program is to give
zone college students the opportunity to find meaningful
and professional experience in Hammond. Through this
program, the HUEA is responding to the demand of college
students who came home to Hammond for the semester
break, eager to work, but unable to find gainful employment.
Currently, the HUEA supplements the cost of an additional
employee for local government offices and businesses,
such as the Efron & Efron; Lowry & Weston;
Elegance Wedding & Evening; and the City of Hammond’s
Government Complex. In turn, those businesses hire
a free college student to assist with daily tasks.
The HUEA is diligently seeking community partners
for both of their work programs. With additional partners,
Hammond businesswomen and businessmen can employ and
mentor more young professionals. Since Indiana suffers
from the regrettable “brain drain”, the
goal of the program is for Hammond to retain their
college interns after graduation, and keep young people
invested in Hammond’s progress.
Applicants must be in college to apply for an internship.
